Jeremy Nathans
Jeremy Nathans (born July 31, 1958 in New York City ) is an American molecular biologist and neuroscientist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine . He is best known for his work on the genetics of color vision and color blindness .
Life
Nathans earned a bachelor's degree in life sciences and chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1979 . In 1985 he received a Ph.D. from David S. Hogness at Stanford University School of Medicine. in biochemistry and in 1987 an MD there as a medical degree. As a postdoctoral fellow , he worked with Axel Ullrich at the biotechnology company Genentech . Nathans has been researching for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1987 .
In 1988 Nathans received his first professorship (assistant professor) for molecular biology , genetics and neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine , in 1992 he became an associate professor there , and in 1993 for ophthalmology . He has held a full professorship since 1996. Nathans is a co-editor of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and a member of the Lasker Awards committee .
Jeremy Nathans is married with two children.
Act
Together with David S. Hogness , Nathans isolated the first DNA sequence of a G-protein-coupled receptor and a eukaryotic sensory receptor, rhodopsin . He identified and sequenced the genes for the three opsins that are involved in color perception in humans and defined the molecular genetic basis of the most common forms of color blindness and color ametropia . Later he turned to various forms of inherited diseases of the retina ( retina ), and the evolution and the normal development of the retina and of biochemistry and cell biology of photoreceptors to. More recent work deals with the biology and pathology of the retinal vessels. Nathans and co-workers pioneered the Frizzled® family of receptors, which play an important role in numerous processes of cell proliferation , pattern formation, and hemostasis ( hemostasis ).
According to Google Scholar , Nathans (as of April 2019) has an h-index of 91.
