Jewhen Spektorskyj

Yevhen Wassylowytsch Spektorskyj ( Ukrainian Євген Васильович Спекторський ; born October 3 . Jul / 15. October  1875 greg. In Ostroh , volhynian governorate , Russian Empire ; † 3. March 1951 in New York , USA ) was a Ukrainian philosopher, jurist, sociologist , Author and university rector. He was a corresponding member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences .

Life

Jewhen Spektorskyj was born into a noble family in Ostroh in Volhynia in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Rivne . Between 1893 and 1897 he studied at the Law Faculty of the University of Warsaw . He then prepared for a professorship at the Institute for Public Law and worked at the university until 1901. Between 1901 and 1903 he studied at the universities of Paris, Berlin, Göttingen and Heidelberg. On June 7, 1903 he became an assistant professor in the Department of Legal Philosophy and History at the University of Warsaw and received his doctorate in 1910 at the University of Tartu . In 1913 he was elected Professor of Legal Philosophy at the Faculty of Law of St. Vladimir University in Kiev , and from 1914 he headed the Kiev Philosophical Society.

In May 1917 he became dean of the law faculty of the University of Kiev and defended his thesis for a doctorate in public law at the University of Moscow . In September 1917 he became a full professor of legal philosophy and history at St. Vladimir University and on April 6, 1918 (with the approval of the Minister of Education on September 28) he was elected rector of the university. He held this office until the Bolsheviks came to power at the end of April 1919. After Denikin recaptured Kiev, he was rector and deputy minister of education of the Ukrainian state from August 17, 1919 to December 1919 .

At the end of 1919 he fled to Odessa and, after he had fled further to Yugoslavia , became a professor there between 1920 and 1924 at the University of Belgrade . Following this, Spektorskyj was between 1924 and 1927 professor and dean of the Russian law faculty at Charles University in Prague . From 1927 to 1930 he was again at Belgrade University and from 1930 to 1945 as a professor at the University in Ljubljana busy. In 1945 he finally emigrated to the United States, where he was professor at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary in New York from 1947 until his death . He was also the first chairman of the Russian Academic Society in the USA. He died in New York in 1951 at the age of 75.
