Jimmy Buffington

James Lawrence "Jimmy" Buffington (born May 15, 1922 in Jersey Shore , Pennsylvania , † July 20, 1981 in Englewood , New Jersey ) was an American jazz French horn player. He became known for playing in the bands of Gil Evans , Quincy Jones and Oliver Nelson .

Life

As an autodidact, Buffington had been playing the flugelhorn since he was at school. In 1954 he started with Mel Powell , in 1956 with Teddy Charles Tentet. During this time he was involved in third-stream recordings by Gunther Schuller , John Lewis , George Russell and Charles Mingus ( Music for Brass , 1956; Modern Jazz Concert , 1957). He later belonged to the circle of musicians such as Urbie Green , Jimmy Cleveland , Ernie Royal , Britt Woodman , Don Butterfield and others who in the 1960s and early 1970s in big band formations of Donald Byrd , John Coltrane , Gil Evans, Dizzy Gillespie , JJ Johnson , Quincy Jones, Michel Legrand , Lee Morgan , Paul Desmond , Eddie Sauter and Oliver Nelson as well as in the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra . So he played with Miles Davis in 1957, when he recorded with the Gil Evans Orchestra Miles Ahead ; Buffington also worked on the Sketches of Spain . He was also involved in the recording of Gil Evans' legendary big band album The Individualism of Gil Evans (1963/64). Buffington also played on records by Wes Montgomery , Jimmy Smith , the Modern Jazz Quartet and Grover Washington Jr. with.

In the 1970s, recordings were made with Freddie Hubbard ( First Light ), Gato Barbieri and George Benson . In 1980 he worked on Helen Merrill's album Casa Forte .
