Don Butterfield
Don Butterfield (born April 1, 1923 in Centralia , Washington , † November 27, 2006 in Clifton , New Jersey ) was an American jazz musician ( tuba , composition ) and music publisher .
Live and act
In 1946 he began studying at the Juilliard School of Music . Butterfield then worked in the studio orchestras of Columbia Broadcasting System and National Broadcasting Company , with Jackie Gleason and Claude Thornhill , but also in the classic American Symphonia . In 1955 and 1956 he worked with Teddy Charles and for the first time with Charles Mingus . With his sextet, founded in 1955, he performed at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958 . He has also made records with Art Farmer , Sonny Rollins , Gerry Mulligan , Jimmy Cleveland , Cannonball Adderley , Rahsaan Roland Kirk , Charlie Mariano , Don Sebesky , Clark Terry and Mingus ( Pre-Bird ).
In 1962 he was with Dizzy Gillespie in Antibes (Jazz à Juan) and previously participated in the legendary Mingus Townhall Concert . In the following year he was used by Mingus to record Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus and The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady , played with Dakota Staton in Newport and with the Oliver Nelson Big Band at the first jazz concert in Lincoln Center . He has also been heard on major orchestral recordings of jazz, for example by Wes Montgomery , Cal Tjader , Jimmy Smith , Oscar Peterson , Lalo Schifrin , Erroll Garner , Kenny Burrell and Bob Brookmeyer . Later he worked increasingly as a studio musician and was also used to record film music (e.g. The Godfather - Part II ). In 1989 he was involved in the recording of Epitaph .
Butterfield prepared the tuba's way into modern jazz and demonstrated that it can also serve as a supple instrument there. As a publisher, he mainly published works for (low) brass instruments, but also for baritone saxophone. He left behind his wife, Alicia.
