James Letson "Jimmy" Frizzell (born February 16, 1937 in Greenock , † July 3, 2016 ) was a Scottish football player and coach.
Career and life
Jimmy Frizzell was born as James Frizzell in 1937 in Greenock , Scotland , about 40 kilometers west of Glasgow . He began his career in the city of his birth, in the youth of Greenock Morton . From the 1957/58 season Frizzell played three seasons for the club in the 2nd division in Scotland. At the beginning of his career Frizzell still played as a striker, but was retrained as a defender in the following years. Frizzell played a total of 41 league games at Greenock Morton and scored four goals. In 1960 he moved to Oldham Athletic in England . With Oldham he succeeded on December 26, 1962 with an 11-0 win against Southport FC, the highest victory in the club's history. In the same season he was with the club runner-up in the fourth division behind Brentford FC . In the Latics , Frizzell had 317 league games and 56 goals by the end of his career as a player in 1970. During the 1969/70 season Frizzell was player-coach of the Latics . In 1971 he led the club to promotion to the Third Division. After a midfield position in his first third division season as a coach, a season later another promotion was missed by three points. However, this succeeded in the 1973/74 season . As a result, the club played for the first time after 1953 in the 2nd division in England. At the end of the 1981/82 season he was surprisingly dismissed. In the summer of 1984 he was assistant coach of Manchester City under Billy McNeill . After his release he took over the head coach of the Citizens in October 1986 . The same fate befell him in May 1987 after relegation from the First Division was sealed.
Jimmy Frizzell died on July 3, 2016 at the age of 79.
