João Paulo Pinto Ribeiro , often referred to as João Paulo for short , (born April 8, 1980 in Porto ) is a former Portuguese football player . He played a total of 229 games in the Portuguese Primeira Liga , the Romanian Liga 1 and the Cypriot First Division .

Athletic career

João Paulo comes from the youth of Boavista Porto . There he advanced to a young national player, with the Portuguese U-18 national team he took part in the U-18 European Championship in 1999 . There he was the decisive player in the final against Italy , as he scored the goal to win the 1-0 final.

At the club level, João Paulo's career at Boavista Porto was less of a success. Although he moved up in 1999 in the first division squad, he was hardly used there and was active as a loan player at various Portuguese clubs in the following seasons. After engagements with Desportivo Aves , CD Feirense , Vitória Setúbal , Varzim SC , SC Beira-Mar and GD Estoril , he finally moved in 2005 to the Spanish Segunda División on CD Tenerife . Here he was only left with the role of a supplementary player, after only six months he was hired at the beginning of 2006 at the first division promoted FC Paços de Ferreira in his home country. After he was surprisingly moved into the European Cup as sixth in the table in the 2006/07 season, the league rival União Leiria wooed him from. He played with the club in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup , but failed in the first round after a 3-1 away defeat despite a 3-2 home win at German Bayer 04 Leverkusen . He had scored two goals and scored eight times in the championship until the winter break.

In January 2008, João Paulo moved abroad again, this time he joined the Bulgarian club Rapid Bucharest . In the following two years he was unable to establish himself as a regular player, so in January 2010 he returned to Portugal. There he should support the Leixões SC , which is in the relegation battle , after only two goals this season he was relegated to the second division with the club. Then his engagement was over, he moved to Cyprus to Olympiakos Nicosia . Here he was with 16 goals this season behind Miljan Mrdaković and Michalis Konstantinou third-best scorer of the championship, whereupon he moved on to Apollon Limassol after only one season .

In 2012, João Paulo returned to Portugal again, he was hired by the newly promoted GD Estoril. The club reached the European Cup surprisingly, but it played a subordinate role. He then moved to the second division team Desportivo Aves after only one season. In summer 2014 he moved to FC Famalicão in the Campeonato Nacional de Seniores . He ended his career at the beginning of October 2015.
