Joachim Berthold
Joachim Berthold (born October 17, 1917 in Eisenach , † September 25, 1990 in Oberaudorf ) was a German sculptor .
Career
From 1936 he was a student of Wolfgang Wallner at the Cologne factory schools and later a master student of Joseph Wackerle at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . After a short activity as a sculptor in the early 1940s and participation in the Second World War , Berthold worked in Oberaudorf after the war until his death.
From 1960 onwards, Berthold became known to a wider audience with solo exhibitions, initially in Germany, followed by international exhibitions in 1966, including in New York , Milan and Vancouver . After Berthold's death, retrospectives were shown in the Samuelis Baumgarte Galerie Bielefeld (2007) and in the Museum Regensburg Regensburg (2008).
family
Joachim Berthold was the son of the goldsmith Karl Berthold and the painter Maria Schmidt-Kugel. Berthold's wife Gisela Berthold-Sames (1917–1996) had also studied at the Cologne Werkschulen; her collection with a large number of her husband's designs and sculptures can be seen in her own gallery building in Oberaudorf.

The central theme of Berthold's sculptures - predominantly in bronze - is the human figure. After expressive beginnings, Berthold's work became increasingly abstract. In sculptures from the 1950s, he largely dispensed with facial features; in later works the outlines appear in abstract shapes or merge with the background. A strong contrast of round and angular, convex and concave, rough and smooth elements is characteristic of Berthold's formal language. Its “human walls” have achieved particular fame.
In addition to international public collections and private collections, Berthold's works can also be found in public spaces; examples are
