Joachim Karnatz

Joachim Karnatz (born March 19, 1921 in Berlin ; † February 15, 1977 there ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Karnatz initially did a commercial apprenticeship, but was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1941. After being seriously wounded, he was discharged from military service in 1944 and worked as a merchant until the end of World War II .

In 1947, Karnatz joined the SPD and studied at the German University of Politics , which he graduated in 1951 with a degree in political science. In 1951 he was elected to the district council of the Schöneberg district, and in the following year Karnatz was elected as district councilor for finance in the Tiergarten district. In the election to the Berlin House of Representatives in 1954 , he was indeed elected, but resigned after a few weeks out, as well as with the Berlin election in 1958 , in both cases because of his activities in the district office.

Since the previous district mayor, Willi Meseck, retired in 1960, Karnatz was elected as district mayor of Berlin-Tiergarten. In 1975 he resigned as mayor after 15 years, his successor was Gottfried Wurche .

Honor

On September 7, 1999, Joachim-Karnatz-Allee was named after him as part of the development of the Moabiter Werder .
