Joachim Maaß (local history researcher)

Joachim Maaß (born February 9, 1844 in Groß Siemz , † February 20, 1921 in Lübeck ) was a German pedagogue and local researcher .

Life

After attending the teachers' seminar in Mirow , he first became an assistant teacher in Selmsdorf and then a teacher in Rupensdorf near Schönberg (Mecklenburg) . Then he was a district school teacher in the Lübeck exclave of Kurau and then in Schlutup . As was usual with teachers at the time, he worked part-time as an organist. In Schlutup the teacher was also traditionally secretary of the Office of the fishermen.

In 1896 he was appointed principal teacher (rector) of the Burg Boys' School in Lübeck . In 1907 he was chairman of the main teachers' conference in the Free and Hanseatic City of Lübeck.

Maaß collected legends and descriptions of old folk customs. He wrote various contributions to the folklore collections of Richard Wossidlo as well as for the communications of the Heimatbund Ratzeburg .

He was married to the folklorist Helene, b. Bohn (1848-1931). One son of the couple, Heinrich Maaß (born March 4, 1871 in Rupensdorf), was rector and organist in Lübeck-Kücknitz from 1910 to 1938 . Another son, Gerhard Maaß, also became a teacher in Lübeck and directed the cathedral choir in the 1920s.
