Baron von Glasenapp (* 1717 in Wardin , Pomerania ; † around 1800 in Cologne ?; born Joachim Reinhold von Glasenapp ) was a Pomeranian lieutenant colonel and founder of the Frei-Husaren Glasenapp regiment . At the end of 1746 he married Anna Elisabeth "Louise" Baronesse von Hundt (* 1724?, † ??), from an old noble family from the Lower Rhine.

Life

Born as the son of Joachim Melchior von Glasenapp , he served from the age of thirteen as a body page in the cadet corps of the Prussian King Friedrich II. In 1740 he was made an ensign and joined the Jung-Tresckow Infantry Regiment No. 32. In 1743 he visited Holtmühle Castle in Tegelen . There he fell in love with Louise von Hundt zur Busch. After a stormy love, the two married on January 9, 1747 in Minden . On July 23, 1745 he became second lieutenant and served 17 years, also as adjutant to General von Wallrawe .

On May 31, 1751 he had to flee because of a duel and the threat of imprisonment in the city of Neisse . In 1757 he was back in Tegelen and established the Frei-Hussars von Glasenapp. After a short interlude with the Saxons, he joined the Fischerschen Freikorps in French service , where he appeared as Rittmeister of the Hussars in Nordhausen from September 15 to 19, 1757. He is said to have participated with his first hussars in the battle of Krefeld on June 23, 1758.

In 1760, after von Glasenapp had resigned from the French service, he placed himself, now as a major, in the service of Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg , together with his Freihusars, whom he had recruited on his estates in the Netherlands. In addition to the hussars, they consisted of dragoons and hunters on horseback and formed a light brigade. On December 21, 1760, Joachim was allowed to erect five squadrons of Glasenapp Frei-Dragoons from Friedrich II as chief in Stolberg and Nordhausen. There were a total of 591 dragoons (500 dragoons, 21 officers, 50 NCOs, 15 trumpeters and 5 flag smiths). Then there were the remaining 68 old hussars. Major von Selchow became the commander of the Frei-Hussars and Frei-Dragoons.

On May 1, 1762 there was a heavy fight near Rötha . Major and chief von Glasenapp threw back the Austrian troops under Marshal von Luszinsky with 200 riders . But the regiment lost one officer, 46 dragoons and hussars and 15 horses. Joachim von Glasenapp himself was wounded and almost taken prisoner. The Frei-Hussars and Frei-Dragoons from Glasenapp fought in Krefeld, Geldern, Frankenhausen , Wolfenbüttel , Leipzig, Nordhausen, Rötha, Meißen and Freiberg in the Seven Years' War .

The first hussars are said to have consisted of a dissolute rabble, but later they are said to have served very well (Hussar book by Graf zur Lippe). Frederick the Great did not praise the Frei-Hussars and Frei-Dragoons. But he is said to have said about Joachim von Glasenapp: "As a soldier he is popular and highly valued, he is easy-going, ingenious, dashing and brave a real war hero."

After the end of the war, the Free Regiment was disbanded on March 31, 1763 and the men were housed in the Silesian Cavalry. After serving eighteen years and ten months and being wounded nine times in the process, Joachim Reinhold von Glasenapp returned to his estates in the Netherlands. The property by marriage in Tegelen ( Geldern ) and his own in Pomerania were very large and important, after all, it was possible for him to set up and maintain a hussar corps - especially a dragoon corps of five squadrons - at his own expense. In addition, he is said to have had the " right " coins to strike. So -called " Glasenäppkens " are said to have been in circulation in the area around Venlo and in Geldern .
