Joachim Smola

Joachim Smola (* 1961 in Gensungen ) is a Gen. of the army of the German Federal Armed Forces . From February 1, 2015 to June 1, 2017, he was Vice President of the Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD).

Military career

Training and first uses

Smola joined the Bundeswehr in 1981 with the 2 anti-tank gun regiment in Kassel . He completed his officer training and then studied from 1982 to 1986 at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg . He completed his studies as a qualified electrical engineer. This was followed by assignments as platoon leader and company commander from 1986 to 1993. He then completed the 38th general staff course.

Service as a staff officer

His first staff officer assignments began in 1996 as staff officer G4 in Weißenfels and department head G2 at the Bundeswehr Intelligence Center in Gelsdorf . In 2000 he became regimental commander of the 14th anti-tank gun regiment in Stavenhagen . This was followed in 2002 for two years as a speaker (Referat II 1) in the command staff of the armed forces in the Federal Ministry of Defense . From 2004 to 2012 he worked in military intelligence , as G2 Operations in the Multinational Corps in Stettin , Head of the G2 Division Airmobile Operations in Veitshöchheim and Head of Strategy and Operations I 3 in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Berlin . From 2012 to 2014 Smola was Head of the Overall Situation Department at the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) in Berlin.

Service as a general

From February 1, 2015 to June 1, 2017, Smola was Vice President of the Military Counterintelligence Service. On this post he was also promoted to brigadier general.

Smola took part in foreign missions of the Bundeswehr three times :

  • Staff officer G2 of the Multinational Brigade South ( KFOR ) in Kosovo
  • Chief Joint Intelligence Center at Headquarters (HQ) ISAF , Kabul
  • Director Fusion Center and Deputy Chief of Staff Operation at Regional Command North (ISAF) in Mazar-E-Sharif
