The Heavenly Joan (original title Joan of Arcadia ) is an American television series that combines family series and fantasy . The main character Joan , played by Amber Tamblyn , a teenager in a small US town, regularly receives tasks from "God".

The series ran from September 2003 to May 2005 on US television before being discontinued after 45 episodes.

action

Joan Girardi is 15 years old and a high school student in the small town of Arcadia, Maryland . She also lives there with her family. Her father, Will Girardi, takes up his post as Arcadia Police Chief, and her mother, Helen, is a high school art teacher. Her younger brother Luke is interested in science, her older brother Kevin is in a wheelchair after a car accident and has to come to terms with it first.

Joan meets a young man who reminds her that she had promised to do God's will if her brother survived his car accident. He prepares her so that from now on he will come to her more frequently in changing guise to give her instructions. From then on, Joan regularly meets people she has never seen before and who claim to be God. They give instructions to Joan. Often these do not make sense to them at first. A garbage collector asks her to find a job, a boy from her grade gives her make-up tips, or a little girl asks her to join the school's chess club. Although she is not sure whether there is God or - if there is - what he wants from her, she puts his instructions into practice and so it is not uncommon for herself to get into trouble or to be ridiculous.

Over time, however, she realizes that she can help those around her in this way and follows the instructions with increasing confidence. In various ways, she gets deeper insights into the life and problems of her parents, siblings and friends and can thus influence what is happening in her social environment. At the same time, she struggles with the problems typical of her age - with the difficulties of growing up, with feelings, friendships and the stress within the family.

background

Throughout the series, the religious aspect is seldom overemphasized - it's less about belief in God or any particular belief than about the development of the characters, who change and visibly mature over the season. God is important to Joan in that He gives her food for thought on how to behave correctly as opposed to how she does it. At the end of each episode there is a kind of morality, something that Joan took with her from the action, although the series manages not to fall into cliché or kitschy. The name of the series is based on the French national heroine Jeanne d'Arc (English Joan of Arc ), who, according to her, also received instructions from God.

The series received multiple awards, including nominations for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for Amber Tamblyn. Due to falling audience numbers, after the second season was broadcast in the US, it was decided not to extend it. The first season was first broadcast in Germany on Pro Sieben , the second season from October 16, 2010 to March 26, 2011 on sixx on German free TV .

occupation

The series was set to music at Telesynchron in Berlin. Ulrike Heiland wrote the dialogue books, Jürgen Kluckert directed the dialogue.
