Joaquín Mendível

Joaquín Mendível Guerra (born March 11, 1919 in Ciego de Ávila , † September 22, 1997 in Miami ) was a Cuban pianist, arranger , composer , orchestra conductor and music teacher.

Mendível studied with Ángela Beltrán and Alberto Noriega and was a student of the Nicaraguan pianist Luis Aguirre at the Conservatorio de Música de Camagüey . In Havana he continued his training with Gustavo Quirós , Armando Romeu and Félix Guerrero . In 1932 he founded the Tiníma Orchestra . He also worked with the Marquesado and Hermanos González orchestras . In 1940 he founded the Orquesta Joaquín .

In Havana he played in the orchestra of the Cabaret Alí Bar , with which Benny Moré performed there. He was also the conductor and pianist of the vocal quartet Los Luceros de Mili , which performed in the Salón Libertad of the Hotel Nacional . He was the first Cuban to write arrangements of Cuban folk music for jazz orchestras. For his composition El son de Mendível (interpreted by Magaly Tars ) he received first prize at the Benny Moré Festival . As a professor, Mendível taught piano, solfège , music theory and music aesthetics at the Universidad Ignacio Agromante and the Universidad Enrique José Varona .

As an arranger, Mendível often worked for Benny Moré, whose orchestra he also directed during recordings. In addition, he arranged for numerous other Cuban musicians such as Ñico Membiela , Nito Rojas , Lino Borges , Pio Leiva , Wilfredo Mendi , Orestes Macias , Bertha Pernas , Margarita García , Eliseo Martínez , Matías Tabío , Frank Hernández , Domingo Lugo , Miguel Ángel Ortiz , Harry Lewis , Caridad Hierrezuelo , Carlos del Valle , Xonia Aragón , Billy González , Barón Mejía , Leovi Garcia , Rita Gil , Tony Rodon , Manuel Licea , Caridad González , Roberto Sánchez , Mercedes Fernández , Roberto Jaramil , Carlos Embale , Nestor del Castillo , Candita Batista , Obdulia Breijo , Iluminada Zequeira and Blanca Rosa Gil .

As a pianist or with his orchestra he accompanied, among many Cuban musicians and Libertad Lamarque from Argentina, Pedro Vargas , Jorge Negrete , Avelina Landin , Chucho Martínez Gil , Carlos Cuevas , Jorge Balán , Paquita la del Barrio and Marta Zeller from Mexico, Ernesto Bonino from Italy, Estrellita Castro from Spain, José Bohr from Argentina, Gisela Guedes from Venezuela, Taiguara da Silva from Brazil, Yolanda Montes from the USA, Rosita Diaz from Panama, Martha Guerrero from the Dominican Republic and others.
