Jocelyn Simon, Baron Simon of Glaisdale
Jocelyn Edward Salis Simon, Baron Simon of Glaisdale PC KC DL (* 16th January 1911 in Hampstead , † 7. May 2006 ) was a British politician of the Conservative Party and a lawyer , who from 1951 to 1962 Member of the House of Commons was in 1971 became a member of the House of Lords on the basis of the Life Peerages Act 1958 and was last Lord Judge between 1971 and 1977 ( Lord of Appeal in Ordinary ).
Life
Lawyer and officer in World War II
After attending the elite Gresham's School , Simon, the son of a broker at the London Stock Exchange , first studied English at Trinity Hall at the University of Cambridge and then studied law . After his legal approval to the Bar Association ( Inns of Court ) from Middle Temple , he joined as a barrister in the law firm of Alfred Denning , where he primarily with family law and the so-called Trust Law dealt.
During the Second World War he joined the Inns of Court Regiment and then served as an officer in the Royal Tank Regiment . During the invasion of Madagascar in 1942, he commanded a group of three Valentine tanks of the Royal Armored Corps and later in the liberation of France from the Vichy regime . For his service in the 36th Infantry Division in the Burma campaign , he was mentioned in the war report ( Mentioned in Despatches ) and was finally promoted to lieutenant colonel.
After the war he resumed his career as a lawyer again and was for his lawyer's services in 1951 to Attorney General ( King's Counsel appointed).
Member of the House of Commons, Junior Minister and Solicitor General
In the general election of October 25, 1951 , Simon was elected as a candidate for the Conservative Party for the first time as a member of the House of Commons and represented the constituency of Middlesborough West until February 28, 1962 for the Conservative Tories .
During this time he was first from 1951 to 1954 Parliamentary Private Secretary Lionel Heald , who at that time Attorney General ( Attorney General ) of England and Wales was. In 1957 he was Parliamentary Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of the Interior ( Home Office ) before he moved to the Treasury ( HM Treasury ) in 1958 as the successor to Enoch Powell as Financial Secretary . He held this office for a year until he was replaced by Edward Boyle , who was previously Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education.
Simon himself succeeded Harry Hylton-Foster as Solicitor General of England and Wales in 1959 and held this position until 1962. Successor was then John Hobson .
Member of the House of Lords and Lord Justice
After leaving the House of Commons on February 28, 1962, Simon, who also became Privy Councilor in 1961 , was appointed to the High Court of Justice responsible for England and Wales , where he succeeded Boyd Merriman, 1st Baron Merriman, President of the Wills -, Divorce and Admiralty Division ( Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Division ). After nine years of service, he was replaced by George Baker on April 19, 1971 in this position, which was then restructured into the Family Division .
Simon, who was named Baron Simon of Glaisdale , of Glaisdale in the North Riding of the County of Yorkshire, and thus became a member of the House of Lords by a letters patent dated February 5, 1971 under the Life Peerages Act 1958 then on April 19, 1971 Lord Judge ( Lord of Appeal in Ordinary ). He held this judicial office until his retirement on September 30, 1977.
At the same time, Baron Simon became Deputy Lieutenant of North Yorkshire in 1973 .
