Jodok Alois Bär , also Baer (born August 23, 1825 in Andelsbuch , † December 15, 1897 in Bregenz ), was an Austrian doctor , author and local researcher .

Life

Origin and family

Jodok Bär was the eldest son of Josef Bär (1787–1848) and Maria Theresia Martha Albrecht (1798–1843). He had a total of 10 siblings (3 brothers, 7 sisters) and came from the Beer family , who later settled in Andelsbuch, among others.

Jodok Bär was married to Maria Wilhelmine Cronenbold (1847–1907) from Prague. They had three children together and one of them was Josef Alois Karl Bär (1874–1952), who later became a doctor and vice mayor of Merano . He is thus great-grandfather of the future chemist and physician Friedrich Bär (1908–1992) and the future director of the Bregenz Festival Ernst Bär (1919–1985).

Career

Jodok Bär finished his medical studies in 1856 as Dr. med. ( Doctor of Surgery ) and then worked as an assistant at the Surgical Clinic in Prague. During this time he published articles on various medical topics, later his focus was on local research. In 1868 he moved from Prague to Tyrol . There he became a district doctor. After moving from Egg , a neighboring community to Andelsbuch, to Bregenz in 1871 , he later became a district doctor shortly before his death.

His field of activity for almost 20 years was local research and so he was committed to the Vorarlberger Museum and the Vorarlberger Museumverein in Bregenz.

Services

By measuring human pelvis as early as 1855, he was able to determine geometric characteristics (direction and relationship, e.g. of pubic symphysis to sit bones and sacrum), which he published in 1864. This consideration found its way into the contemporary standard literature on obstetrics .

But his consideration of the medical system in 1886 has also been referenced again and again from a city-historical perspective.

His biography of the artist family Moosbrugger and Liberat Hundertpfund was taken up in various works.

In the area of local history research, he succeeded in describing the type of Vorarlbergerhaus, which is also used today as a reference. Later he also described the Walserhaus in its typical architectural form. His descriptions of the house types were taken into account in the Austrian Folklore Atlas by Ernst Burgstaller , Adolf Helbok and Richard Wolfram et al. 1980. Likewise with Eugen Gabriel in the Vorarlberger Sprachatlas , by Karl Ilg , Albert Knoepfli , Adolf Leidlmair and Viktor Herbert Pöttler .

He is the author of the first catalog of the Vorarlberg State Museum and contributed a large part of the collection of Swabian sculpture from the 16th century. After his death, around 100 books from his private library were given to the Vorarlberg State Museum.
