Joseph "Joe" Edward Cronin (born October 12, 1906 in San Francisco , California , † September 7, 1984 in Osterville , Massachusetts ) was an American baseball player and manager in Major League Baseball (MLB).

biography

Joe Cronin, in San Francisco was born and worked there as a bank clerk made his debut in the National League with the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 29, 1926. In Pittsburgh he had on his position of shortstop strong competition in Arky Vaughan , so he 1928 joined the Washington Senators . There he made the breakthrough. 1930 had his best year. He achieved a batting average of 34.6% and scored 126 RBI . The Sporting News magazine named him Player of the Year. The official MVP title did not exist until 1931.

In 1933, Cronin also took over the position of manager with the Senators. In his first year in office he was able to win the championship in the American League with his team . In the World Series , however, the New York Giants retained the upper hand.

Before the 1935 season he moved to the Boston Red Sox , where he also performed the dual role of player and manager. He played his last game with the Red Sox on April 19, 1945. He had to end his playing career due to a broken leg. As a manager, he won the championship with the Red Sox in 1946, but had to admit defeat again in the World Series, this time against the St. Louis Cardinals .

Cronin had eight times in his career a batting average of over 30 0% in one season and eight seasons with more than 100 RBI. He has been nominated as an All Star seven times .

After the 1947 season he became general manager of the Red Sox. He held this post until 1958. During his tenure, no African-American player played with the Red Sox on the major league team. In 1956 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame . In January 1959 he was elected President of the American League. 1973 Lee MacPhail replaced him in this position.

Cronin died in 1984 at the age of 77. His jersey number 4 is no longer awarded by the Boston Red Sox.
