Joël Stein (born May 25, 1926 in Saint-Martin-Boulogne , France , † July 2012 ) was a French painter , printmaker and kinetic artist and representative of Op Art . Along with Julio Le Parc , François Morellet , Horacio Garcia Rossi , Francisco Sobrino and Yvaral, he was one of the co-founders of the group of artists Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel (GRAV) in 1960 . Stein lived and worked in Paris .

life and work

Joël Stein began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1946 and attended Fernand Léger's workshop . As early as 1956, he planned the first artistic tables based on the geometric foundations of mathematics. From 1958 he developed the idea of ​​the labyrinth , still two-dimensional. In 1959 he designed the first reliefs . As a light and object artist, he begins to work with like-minded people in the Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel . He worked heavily on the visual activation of the viewer.

In 1962 he investigated the chromatic polarization of light and designed his first Polascopes boxes. Joël Stein worked with rotating disks, triads, kaleidoscopes , and the first labyrinth from 1963. He created compositions with mirrors that create short-lived and unstable movements and structures. Inspired by the possibilities of new technologies, Joël Stein started working with lasers and the effect of colors from 1968 .
