Career

societies

Beginning

At a young age, Barton began playing in the youth teams of Everton FC . At the age of 14 he was fired from the youth department and tried to find a new club. When Barry Poynton, a former Everton scout, heard of this fact, he invited Barton to Manchester City . After a first trial session, it made a good impression and was accepted. In 1999 he came to the U-17 team for the first time and in the 2000/01 season he made his debut in the Manchester reserve team. After increasing and constant performance, he was part of the Citizens' professional squad from 2002/03 .

Manchester City

His first competitive appearance in the professional team of Manchester City he had on April 5, 2003 against the Bolton Wanderers . He scored his first goal in the Premier League two weeks later, on April 18, when his team beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 . After a good start in the professional league, he signed a new one-year contract for 2003/04. During this season he developed into a regular player and top performer, which earned him a call-up to the squad of the U-21 national team for the qualifying games for the European Championship against Macedonia and Portugal .

In the FA Cup game against Tottenham Barton received his first red card: During a battle of words with the referee at half-time break of this Barton showed red, although the game had just interrupted. After his team were already 3-0 down, the tide turned after Barton was sent off and Manchester won 4-3.

When he was not considered on April 17, 2004, in the league game after the FA Cup against Southampton FC , he left the City of Manchester Stadium angrily . At the end of this season he was voted “Best Young Professional of the Year” by club supporters. On September 22, 2004 he signed a new contract until 2007. After Middlesbrough FC had expressed interest in the defensive player in January 2006 , Manchester extended his contract early in July for four more years.

Newcastle United

But instead of staying loyal to Manchester City, Barton moved to Newcastle United for the 2007/08 season for a transfer fee of £ 5.8 million . Until recently, West Ham United had also bid for the player's services. On July 17, 2007, he made his debut for the Magpies in the friendly against Hartlepool United . An injury set him back shortly afterwards, and he wasn't able to start training again until October. On October 22, 2007 he made his Premier League debut for Newcastle when he came on as a substitute in the 3-1 win over Tottenham. During his first Tyne-Wear derby , the local derby between Newcastle and Sunderland FC , he fouled his opponent Dickson Etuhu so brutally that the media demanded the professional's final suspension. The FA decided against reacting and shortly after the game, Barton apologized for his offense.

In December of the same year, he physically attacked fans who had previously verbally abused the manager and team. For this behavior, he was sentenced to six months in prison in May 2008, but was released after just 74 days (see: prison sentence ). Despite his detention between May and July 2008, he got a new chance with his previous employer.

On November 10, he was suspended for three games after punching Norwegian Morten Gamst Pedersen in the ribs in the game against Blackburn .

Queens Park Rangers

In August 2011, Barton moved to the Queens Park Rangers on a free transfer during the current season before the end of the transfer window . He had previously attacked his opponent Gervinho after a supposed swallow in the Newcastle game against Arsenal . Gervinho received the red card after a blow with the open palm against Barton. Barton received only the yellow card despite the attack of the lying opponent. On the last day of the Premier League season 2011/12 against Manchester City, Barton was red again after an assault against Carlos Tevez . A few seconds after being sent off, he kicked Sergio Aguero in the thigh. Barton has been criticized for abandoning his team at an important stage in the battle against relegation. At the end of the season, Barton was given a record ban of 12 games for his offenses in the game against Manchester City by the English Association.

Olympique Marseille

On August 31, 2012 Barton moved for a year on loan to the French first division club Olympique Marseille .

He scored his first goal for Marseille in the Europa League in a 2-2 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach .

On May 6, 2013, he was suspended for two games because he previously insulted his opponent Thiago Silva from Paris Saint-Germain on the Internet platform Twitter as an “overweight ladyboy”.

Return to the Queens Park Rangers

For the 2013-14 second division season , Barton returned to the Queens Park Rangers.

On October 26, 2013, during a game against Burnley FC , he was hit in the head by a Coke bottle that a Burnley supporter threw onto the field.

At the end of the season, Barton rose with the Queens Park Rangers after the detour via the play-offs back to the Premier League.

Burnley FC

In August 2015 Barton moved to the 2nd English division for Burnley FC.

Glasgow Rangers

In May 2016, Barton signed a two-year deal with Glasgow Rangers from Scotland. On November 10, 2016, his contract was terminated.

Return to Burnley FC

Barton returned to Burnley in January 2017, his first FA Cup draw against Sunderland in a goalless draw. In the Premier League, Barton came on in the 73rd minute of the game against Southampton and scored the decisive winning goal 5 minutes later. In April 2017, Barton made headlines again off the pitch, he was banned by the English Football Association for 18 months because he is said to have participated in sports betting and this is forbidden for active professional footballers.

National team

On February 7, 2007 in the game against Spain Barton made his debut for the English senior team when he came on for Frank Lampard in the 78th minute .

Others

Barton has often attracted attention through off-field misconduct throughout his career. For example, at a Christmas party, he stuck a cigar in the eye of a youth player. He also had to leave a tournament in Thailand , in which he was participating with his team, early because he was involved in a fight with an opposing fan. As a result of these events, he underwent anger management therapy.

suspension

On May 3, 2007 he was suspended from his club (Manchester City). He had beaten his teammate Ousmane Dabo to hospital during training .

On May 5, 2009 he was again suspended from his club, now Newcastle United.

prison sentence

On December 27, 2007, Barton was arrested in downtown Liverpool with a 19-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman. They had beaten up a passer-by at a bus stop and were filmed by a surveillance camera. After an initial hearing in Liverpool on December 28, Barton remained in custody. A second court hearing was scheduled for January 3, 2008. On May 20, 2008, a Liverpool court sentenced him to six months in prison and £ 2,500 in damages. He was released from the detention center 74 days later.
