Joey (Joe) Schmidt-Muller , (born September 7, 1950 in Allschwil ) is a Swiss-Australian artist.

Life

Joey Schmidt-Muller was born (as Josef Schmidt) in Allschwil, in the canton of Basel-Landschaft . After the preliminary course at the Basel School of Design (1 year), he completed a four-year graphic apprenticeship as a retoucheur at the Birkhäuser Verlag in Basel . Afterwards graphic training in Zurich and Cape Town , South Africa . First drawings and a cartoon character emerge.

The decision to lead a free artistic life led him to return to Switzerland, Niederwald VS , ( Goms district ), canton of Valais in 1971 . The first time he lived with his mother, Margarete Schmidt, in an attic in the Cesar Ritz house . The village idyll did not please him for long. Soon he moved on to Basel to take drawing and painting lessons again at the arts and crafts school. He had first contacts with the Basel artists Jean Tinguely (1925–1991), Franz Fedier (1922–2005), Gustav Stettler (1913–2005), Andreas His (1928–2011) and the members of the Farnsburg group : Joseph Edward Duvanel (1941 –1986), Fahrner (1932–1977), Walter Wegmüller (1937–), Irène Zurkinden (1909–1987) and the fashion designer Fred Spillmann (1915–1986).

The " New Objectivity " was an important art movement in the German Reich and covers the period of the Weimar Republic from 1918 to 1933. It emerged immediately after the First World War, with the turn of many artists such as Otto Dix and George Grosz to socially critical pictorial subjects and ended in 1933 with the seizure of power by the National Socialists.

The examination and transformation of socially critical, traumatic and illusionistic thoughts formed from 2009 Joey's (pseudonym "Josua" until 1986) new, own style, the "Traumatic Objectivity", which is understood as a connection and continuation of the "New Objectivity" from 1933 is. The basic idea was that we all wear a mask and hide our thoughts, fears and feelings every day. The focus of his artistic implementation is on people and transience, reduced to the essentials, which make his thoughts understandable with the help of the visible. In 2012 the catalog “Traumatic Objectivity” was published on the occasion of a retrospective in the Galerie Haus zum Wolf in Basel, CH.

In 2013 he realized his first art project “Red Balloon” with the artist group H`ART from Rheinfelden, which was supposed to form a floating red borderline between Switzerland and Germany on the Rhine near Rheinfelden. The action was interrupted by the water police. This was followed in 2013 by the “Red Balloon Extension” in Weil am Rhein. 2014 “The Vogel Gryff Affair” on the Rhine ferry in Basel, 2015 “Live Stream” in Rheinfelden-Herten and “The blind Passenger” in Basel, 2016 “Cherry Blossom” in Unna and “The Snake” in Eupen, Belgium. In 2014 he left the artist group H`ART.
