The Indian Games ( Portuguese Jogos dos Povos Indígenas ) are an initiative of the Comitê Intertribal (ITC) and with the support of the Brazilian Ministry of Sports, which took place annually in Brazil in 1996 for the first time and since 1999 , in which representatives of the country's indigenous peoples compete against each other in an Olympic style.

The Jogos were created on the initiative of the Indian leaders Marcos Terena and Carlos Terena, which were rejected until 1996. Only the newly appointed Brazilian Minister of Sport, Pelé, supported the previously unique large company, so that the Ministry of Sports also secured the financing.

Attendees

A special feature of the second games in 1999 was the participation in the blowgun competition by five members of the critically endangered Matis people who had been out of contact for around 20 years.

In the meantime, observers from indigenous peoples from other countries (Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Ecuador, French Guiana, Peru and Venezuela) took part, among which Indians from Canada and French Guiana have already participated in the competitions.

Competitions

There are competitions in traditional sports such as blowpipe shooting , traditional archery , javelin throwing , tug-of-war , palm tree trunk running, tree stump carrying, etc., but also in modern sports such as football, swimming, canoeing, athletics with a 100-meter run and 5000-meter cross-country skiing, in total up to 16 different disciplines. In addition to the actual competitions, other traditional and regional sports and skills are also presented in the supporting program, including Akô, Jãmparti, Jawari, Kagot, Kaipy, Katukaywa - a ball game that is only played with the knee, Ronkrã (Rõkrã), Tihimore, Xikunahaty - Another ball game that is played with the head, from the team fights Aipenkuit, Huka-huka, Iwo and Idjassú.
