Life

The son of master weaver Johan Adolph Friedrich Kittendorff (1793–1849) and Anna Amalia Elisabeth, née Kuhn (1797–1864), grew up with his siblings Axel Theodorand Amalia Eleonore (1817–1890) in Copenhagen. Here he first completed an apprenticeship as a room painter with master painter JG Berg and then switched to further training at Emil Bærentzen's Litographic Institute (Em. Bærentzen & Comp.). At the same time he attended the Copenhagen Art Academy for several years. Here he was awarded the small silver medal in 1841 and the large silver medal in 1849. In 1850 he founded a lithographic institute with JW Tegner (1815-1893), which existed until Tegner's death. From 1855 to 1893 he worked as a drawing teacher in the preparatory class of the academy, of which he was elected in 1880. In 1890 he was made a knight of the Order of Dannebrog . He was close friends with the painters Vilhelm Marstrand and Vilhelm Kyhn. He remained unmarried throughout his life. His grave is preserved in the old cemetery in Fredriksberg. In 1904, a foundation for artists was set up from his estate.

As early as 1845 Kittendorff made lithographic reproductions of the pen drawings by Johan Thomas Lundbye for the children's fables ( Fabler for børn , 1845) by Hans Vilhelm Kaalund (1818–1885). He drew the illustrations for Felttogene: 1848. 49. 50 by Wilhelm Holst (1807–1898) for his brother Axel, who was trained as a woodcutter and who had founded the xylographic institute Kittendorff & Aagaard in 1849 with Johan Peter Aagaard .
