Johann Adolf Hoffmann
Johann Adolf Hoffmann (also: Johann Adolph Hofmann ; born August 26, 1676 in Zarpen ; † November 17, 1731 in Hamburg ) was a German philosophical author and translator.
Life
Hoffmann attended the Katharineum in Lübeck from 1694 , studied from May 2, 1696 at the University of Wittenberg , returned to Holstein in 1701 and continued his studies at the University of Copenhagen in 1702 . After his studies, he traveled to various European countries with young nobles and settled in Amsterdam as a private scholar and jewelry dealer . In 1719 he turned his back on Amsterdam and moved to Hamburg, where he became a member of the Patriotic Society in 1723. He died after another trip abroad from 1729 to 1731.
As an author, Hoffmann was a representative of the Early Enlightenment in Germany. Above all his two books on the satisfaction on the grounds of reason and belief and his political comments on true and false statecraft have acquired special significance. From 1724 to 1726 he belonged to the group of authors of the moral weekly Der Patriot published in Hamburg .
He also translated Marcus Aurelius ' self-reflections (Τὰ εἰς ἑαυτόν), books by Marcus Tullius Cicero (e.g. de officiis), a commentary on Justin the Martyr and a detailed commentary on the explanation of Romans . In his main works and proven five essays, Hoffmann sought above all to combine his ideas of ethics with the economic ideas of the 18th century.
