Life

During his childhood, the family moved to Dresden in 1784. It was here that his artistic talent was discovered and consequently he studied drawing lessons at the Dresden Art Academy from 1787 to 1791 . There he was a student of Adrian Zingg . He then studied with the court copper engraver Christian Gottfried Schulze and devoted himself primarily to landscape engraving. After completing his studies, he worked as a freelancer in Dresden. In 1796 16 landscapes were created from the Plauen reason ; at the 1801 art exhibition in Dresden they caused a sensation. Due to his high level of attention to detail and demanding work, he developed into the first-rate and most sought-after engraver of his time. He was recommended to the Elector of Saxony by the general director of the Dresden Art Academy, Count Marcolini . From 1804 he worked mainly for Elector Friedrich August III. and participated in art exhibitions.

In 1808 and 1810 he received the gold medal of the Milan Art Academy for engravers. On January 5, 1811, he was appointed a member of the Dresden Art Academy and on December 31, 1815, he was appointed associate professor. In the same year the Berlin Art Academy appointed him a member, in 1814 the Milan Art Academy followed, and a little later the St. Petersburg and Copenhagen Art Academy with their appointments. In addition to his work in Dresden, he made engravings for the Musée Napoléon in Paris . He also made engravings for Johann Christian Klengel , Philipp Otto Runge , Frederik de Moucheron and Joseph Wynants on their behalf. He illustrated volumes 1 and 3 of the Augusteum for the Dresden archaeologist Wilhelm Gottlieb Becker . The 40 engravings from the Seifersdorfer valley were again given the highest recognition. The artists Johann Gottfried Abraham Frenzel , Johann Gottlob Schuman and Eduard Harnapp were among his students. In 1819 he fell ill with a black star ; Due to the deterioration in his health, he ended his artistic work on January 1, 1829.

His works can be found in numerous collections: in the Dresden State Art Collections , in the Dresden City Museum , in the Dresden Grain Museum , in the Nuremberg City Museum and Berlin .
