history

Dora Stock's self-portrait was originally on display in the Körnermuseum.

The museum was opened on March 28, 1875 by Emil Peschel . It was located at Körnerstraße 7 (Am Kohlmarkt) in the former home of the Dresden family Körner. The street "Kohlmarkt" was renamed "Körnerstraße" in memory of Theodor Körner on the 50th anniversary of his death on August 26, 1863. The Japanese Palace and today's Hotel Bellevue are located in the immediate vicinity of the site's museum . The house was the home of Christian Gottfried Körner and the birthplace of his son Theodor Körner.

The private collection included memories of the Körner family and their circle of friends, to which Friedrich Schiller belonged. The collection included works by Theodor Körner's sister Emma Körner and Dora Stock . Drawings, busts, paintings, printed matter, manuscripts and autographs were exhibited. In 1885 the Peschel Municipal Collections took over the museum and had it redesigned in 1929. The Schilling Museum also belonged to the municipal collections .

From February 13 to 15, 1945, the grain museum and a large part of the exhibits were destroyed in the bombing of Dresden . Some exhibits have been transferred to the Kügelgenhaus - Museum of Dresden Romanticism and Schillerhäuschen .

Today the bronze sculpture “The Körner Family and their Circle in Dresden” by Wolf-Eike Kuntsche at the approximate location of the Körnermuseum commemorates the Körner family. The still life, created between 1985 and 1987, stands on a granite base and is framed by a cube-shaped steel frame with edges 80 centimeters long. The entire work of art is 2.5 meters high.

Two panels on the wall next to the sculpture also remind of Friedrich Schiller's stay in Körner's house from 1786 to 1787 and of Theodor Körner's birth in 1791.
