Johann Baptist Jehle was born in 1774 in Waldkirch, then in the Upper Austrian region , today a district of Waldshut-Tiengen, as the son of Johann Michael Jehle, the last Redman in the county of Hauenstein . After completing a law degree in Freiburg im Breisgau and Vienna , he took up his first position as in-house counsel for the city of Laufenburg . Following this position he was appointed bailiff of the Olsberg women's monastery .

In 1797, in the Peace of Campo Formio , Austria had to cede the Fricktal southwest of Waldshut to France and the area became a French protectorate . In the Peace of Lunéville of 1801 Austria had to give up the Fricktal for good. The area was added to the Helvetic Republic and from February 1802 formed the short-lived canton of Fricktal .

Due to his position, Johann Baptist Jehle was involved in the political turmoil in the canton of Fricktal and founded the so-called country party. Together with Johann Karl Fetzer and Franz Joseph Venerand Friderich , he was one of the most prominent opponents of Sebastian Fahrländer , who, with French support, had appointed himself governor. On September 22nd, 1802, Jehle and Fetzer succeeded in overthrowing Fahrlander, who had lost confidence with large amounts of money given to supporters and French officials. When Fahrländer, who had already been arrested, claimed power in Laufenburg again on October 2nd, 1802 with the help of the French ambassador, Jehle penetrated the town at the head of a crowd of armed countrymen. October and had him taken to Rheinfelden.

In December 1802, Jehle and Friderich were sent to Paris as representatives of the canton to the Helvetic Consulta . After the Fricktal was annexed to the Canton of Aargau in February 1803, Jehle was a member of the Court of Appeal in Aarau and from 1813 president of the Aargau Higher Court . From 1803 to 1837 and again from 1841 to 1847 he was a member of the Grand Council and repeatedly represented the canton in meetings . In the spring of 1833 he moved to Rheinfelden as district court president, where he died in 1847.
