Life

Vermehren was an early romantic poet who was clearly overshadowed by the great poets of his time whom he admired. He had at the Philosophy Faculty of the University of Jena in 1799 doctorate , a year later habilitated and taught there as a lecturer until 1803 scarlet fell ill and died.

His first poems appeared in Musenalmanach of Friedrich Schiller and the Berlinische archive time. His ten letters about Friedrich Schlegel's Lucinde for the correct appreciation of the same earned him the patronage of Friedrich Schlegel after it was published in 1800 , while contemporary criticism tore the work to pieces. Friedrich Schleiermacher's familiar letters then put Vermehren's reflections on Lucinde completely on the sidelines. With the helpful support of Friedrich Schlegel, Vermehren published his romantic muse almanac twice, published in Leipzig in 1802 and in Jena in 1803 . In addition to the 15 poems by Friedrich Schlegel, contributions by Sophie Mereau , Stephan August Winkelmann , Klopstock and Hölderlin have appeared in Vermehrens Almanach .

On April 20, 1801, Vermehren married the widow of the Reichspostmeister in Jena, twelve years his senior, Johanna Henriette von Eckardt, daughter of the Privy Councilor and Professor Johann Ludwig von Eckardt (1732–1800). The son from this marriage, Friedrich Bernhard Vermehren (1802–1871), later became a Secret Higher Appeal Judge at the General Higher Appeal Court in Jena for the Ernestine States, from which in 1878 the Jena Higher Regional Court emerged . His grandson was the classical philologist Moritz Vermehren (1829-1893), associate professor at the University of Jena.
