Johann Christian Keck

Johann Christian Keck (* 1631 in Strasbourg , † 1687 in Durlach ) was a poet and margrave of Baden-Durlach court and church councilor as well as director of the Durlach grammar school and all Latin country schools and the scholarship holders.

Life

Keck was born as the son of Pastor Keck in Strasbourg and learned the Hebrew language at the age of 7. At the age of 16 he disputed under Johann Heinrich Boeckler about "the Celtic or German language" ( de lingua Celtica sive Germanica ).

Also in 1647 he was a respondent in Strasbourg, where he was a law student. He then traveled to Sweden with his teacher Boeckler , and in 1649 greeted Queen Christine in Uppsala with a Latin poem that was printed in Stockholm .

In 1659, Margrave Friedrich V von Baden appointed him first as his secret secretary, later as councilor and Ephorus (director) of the Durlach grammar school and all Latin country schools as well as the scholarship holders.

In Latin eloquence and poetry he is said to have been unsurpassed at the time. He made a name for himself at the Durlacher Hof with solemn poems of praise to people from the von Baden princely family.

In terms of art and antiquity, Johann Christian Keck was next to the Baden steward Johann Elsener von Löwenstern , the painter, engraver and publisher Matthäus Merian the Younger , as well as the French doctor and numismatist Charles Godmother, adviser to Margrave Friedrich VI. who was an avid collector of works of art and antiquities, especially coins and medals. In 1672 Keck dedicated a poem to his godmother.

The philologist , lawyer and pedagogue got into debt through negligence , from which he tried to save himself from the high school's fiscus . Therefore, the resignation of all his offices was suggested to him. According to other opinions, planned changes to his teaching method were the reason why he insultedly asked for his dismissal in 1684 and withdrew to his Schaichhof near Tübingen .

Afterwards, Margrave Friedrich Magnus called him back to Durlach, where he died in 1687.

Most of his manuscripts have been lost. Respected, potential buyers would have offered large sums for it after his death. Intended for printing, Keck had his Preceptor Resch copy it.

His widow had married a country clergyman in the Duchy of Württemberg , and so his poems and manuscripts, including the news about the Durlach grammar school, came from the margraviate of Baden-Durlach . At the time, attempts were made in vain to get them back.

Keck was also on friendly terms with Nikolaus Heinsius . He dedicated a poem to him, which he had printed in Stockholm in memory of his second trip to Italy. The third edition was published in Amsterdam in 1666 .
