Johann Christoph von Seherr and Thoss (born February 17, 1670 in Lissen , † January 14, 1743 in Brno ) (from 1721 Freiherr) was imperial field marshal as well as commander of the city and fortress of Brno. He was the only Protestant among the senior officers .

origin

His parents were Heinrich (Hinricus) II. Von Seherr and Thoss (* June 16, 1637; † February 9, 1677) and his second wife Anna Hedwig von Berge and Herrendorf († January 29, 1684) from the Herrendorff family.

Life

He joined the imperial army and took part in the siege of Temesvar in 1696. In 1699 he became lieutenant, in 1708 imperial adjutant general to Prince Eugene of Savoy and Gido Starhemberg. In the War of the Spanish Succession he was involved in the capture of Košice. As early as 1711 he was a colonel in the cuirassier regiment Hamilton. In the 6th Austrian Turkish War he fought in Peterwardein and in 1717 directed the construction of bridges over the Danube near Pantschowa, thereby enabling the march on Belgrade. During the siege of Belgrade he stormed the camp of the Turkish Grand Vizier with two dismounted cavalry squadrons. Subsequently, he was authorized representative of the Emperor Charles VI. and of Prince Eugene in the negotiations for the Peace Treaty of Passarowitz . On October 10, 1723 he was promoted to general field sergeant and in 1727 he became the owner of the 4th Cuirassier Regiment (in the lists he is wrongly called Scher von Schertshof ). On November 6th, 1733 he became a Lieutenant Field Marshal. In 1734 he accompanied Prince Eugene to the Rhine and in 1735 the Count of Seckendorf to the Salm and the Moselle . In the same year on April 23, 1735 he was appointed General of the Cavalry and in 1736 he was appointed a real Privy Councilor. In 1739 he fought under Georg Olivier von Wallis in Hungary, including the unfortunate battle of Grocka . Nevertheless, he was promoted to field marshal in 1739. He submitted several suggestions for improvement to Empress Maria Theresa , which led to an army reform. In the meantime he was also appointed in command of Kronstadt in Transylvania . In October 1741 he became the commanding general and governor in Moravia and commander in Brno as the commander of the Spielberg fortress . During the First Silesian War he also fought against the Prussians. He died on January 14, 1743 in Brno, presumably of gout and a stroke.

After Johann Christoph had regained Tannhausen ( Waldenburg district ) in Lower Silesia in 1723 , his wife Charlotte founded the spa town of Bad Charlottenbrunn in 1724 .

family

He was married twice. His first wife was the Countess Clara Johanna von Purgstall (born September 13, 1687, † August 15, 1720). The couple had three children, of which only the daughter survived:

  • Johann Eleonore Catharina († 1737) ⚭ 1732 Georg Heinrich von Dyher, Imperial Rittmeister

He married Countess Charlotte Maximiliane von Pückler , Freiin von Groditz (February 17, 1696, † November 24, 1770) in Mangschütz on May 6, 1721 . The couple had several children including:
