Johann Daniel de Freins was the son of the hereditary daughter Anna Becker from Mainz and Adolph (de) Freins, businessman and probably patrician from Aachen or the Spanish Netherlands . He was married to the Holstein woman Catharina Dorothea von Iversen / Yver (s) sum and had numerous children.

A memorial stone "... of Johann Daniel von Freins-Nordstrand, aristocratic privy councilor and chief chef from Holstein-Gottorp ..." is located in Schleswig and describes him there as a wine merchant and ducal cellar master. Born in the Rhineland , the Schleswig merchant also owned warehouses in Hamburg and Flensburg and traded his goods as far as East Prussia and Stockholm.

The wine merchant's best customer was Duke Christian Albrecht . At first Freins was only the cupbearer of the court and soon rose to the position of Privy Councilor and court kitchen master (also cellar master). Since the duke was in financial difficulties, he owed more of his money to Freins. By the death of Christian de Cort , a Oktroy - participation certificates of North beach , the Duke in 1670 came into the possession of about 4 km 2 large area on the island. He left this with all goods, judicial rights and freedoms to the wine merchant in order to pay off the debts. Through further land acquisition and purchase, Freins enlarged his land considerably until 1682.

It is unclear whether Johann Daniel Freins was actually awarded a courtly Danish - Holstein nobility (document dated December 28, 1680), or whether the territorial rights and exemption (freedom from court and taxation) were later interpreted as a nobility elevation. But that is irrelevant, since his two sons remained unmarried or without descendants; the Freins-Nordstrand family died out in the male line in 1704. His older son Friedrich Adolf († July 13, 1704 in Schleswig) became a real privy councilor, also held the court office of the cellar master in Holstein and was married to Maria Helena Pelser (born December 14, 1670 in Aachen ) without children; the younger Hans Daniel (* 1652; † April 14, 1701 on Nordstrand) died unmarried.

A daughter of Johann Daniel married the stable Franziskus Indervelden, son of the Brabant entrepreneur and dikemaster Quirinus Indervelden (van der Velden). Further daughters married into the noble families and aldermen Ahlefeld , Braumann and Pelser. The eldest daughter married the Electoral Mainz Chancellor Johann Wilhelm Merz von Quirnheim . After the death of Hans Freins, the Merz family owned the old Danish and Nordstrander estates until at least 1792.
