Johann Scheffer von Leonhardshoff
Johann Scheffer von Leonhardshoff (born October 30, 1795 in Vienna ; † January 12, 1822 there ) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist .
Life
Scheffer von Leonhardshoff came from a noble, but destitute family from Fulda . He was still almost a child when he studied with Hubert Maurer at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . Under the influence of the Nazarene Joseph Sutter , he turned away from academism. In 1812 he went on a study trip to Venice to see his sister and on to Ferrara , where he contracted the disease from which he was to die so early.
He returned from Italy to Klagenfurt , where the Gurk Prince-Bishop Franz Xaver Salm-Reifferscheid became his patron and appointed him a chamber painter . In 1814 Salm made another trip to Italy possible for him, which took the artist to Venice, Milan , Florence , Rome , Naples and Sicily . In Rome he made friends with Friedrich Overbeck and was accepted into the Lukasbund in 1815 , in the vicinity of which he now lived and worked. He was admitted to Pope Pius VII and received the Order of Christ for a portrait of the Pope . Scheffer von Leonhardshoff was jokingly called "Raffaelino" by his friends. In 1816 he returned to Klagenfurt, where he became seriously ill. In 1819 he moved to Vienna and stayed in Rome for the last time from 1820 to 1821. After returning to Vienna from there, his illness worsened noticeably. He passed away after a short time, not yet 26 years old.
