biography

Engelhard was born in Zweibrücken in the Palatinate and spent his childhood there. In 1796 the family settled in Murten after his father Johann Friedrich had received the position of city doctor . Engelhard completed a medical degree at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg im Breisgau . From 1807 to 1810 he served as a medical officer in a Swiss regiment in French services. From 1811 he was a district doctor in Villeneuve , from 1813 he practiced this activity in Murten. In 1814 he was naturalized in Murten, four years later he succeeded his father as a city doctor.

In addition to his work as a city doctor, Engelhard held various offices. From 1816 he was a member of the district court, from 1830 vice-president of the district court . In 1826 he became a member of the health council of the canton of Friborg , and in the following year he became a sack master in Murten. He was the governor and, from 1830, the chief magistrate of the lake district . In his free time he did local history studies. In 1828, for example, he published a chronicle and a town book for the city of Murten, and in 1840 a historical representation of the lake district.

Engelhard represented moderately liberal views. In 1840 he was elected to the Freiburg Grand Council , to which he belonged until 1847 (1840 and 1843 as Vice-President). He ran for the National Council elections in 1854 and was elected in the Freiburg-North constituency. Although he himself was reformed, he campaigned for the interests of Freiburg's Catholics, including against the then radical-liberal cantonal government. Another important concern was the correction of the Jura waters . In 1860 he resigned as a member of the National Council in favor of his son Johann Anton Engelhard .
