Ludwig Wachler, theologian and historian

Johann Friedrich Ludwig Wachler (born April 15, 1767 in Gotha , † April 4, 1838 in Breslau ) was a German teacher , literary historian , librarian and university professor .

Life

Prepared by private tutors, Wachler attended the final class of the grammar school in Gotha in 1783/84 and was matriculated at the University of Jena as a student of Protestant theology in autumn 1784 . Because of a duel , he was expelled and enrolled in philological studies at the University of Göttingen . Debts he had incurred during his studies forced him to take up a position as a private tutor in Rinteln . 1788 doctorate he attended the University of Rinteln to Dr. phil. In 1790 he became rector of the Friedrichs-Gymnasium Herford . In 1794 he went to Rinteln University as a professor of theology and then also of history.

In 1801 he moved to the Philipps University of Marburg . He was elected rector for the year 1810/11 . In 1814 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

In 1815 he followed the call of the new Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Breslau to the chair of history and was at the same time school and consistorial councilor . In 1830/31 he was again rector of the university. His frankness, which was demonstrated at the gymnastics lock , meant that he had to resign from school and consistorial business in 1824. While retaining his professorship, he was appointed senior librarian at the University Library in Wroclaw .

During his teaching at the University of Marburg, the Brothers Grimm also made Wachler's acquaintance and have been in casual contact with him ever since. They studied law in Marburg and occasionally attended Wachler's lectures on the side. This made Wachler an example of contemporary scientific work on the recent history of language and literature . However, from the outset they were critical of the methods and theses of Wachler's literary historiography.

family

Wachler founded the Prussian line through his relegation from the University of Jena (Thuringia). His father, Carl Adolph, was a ducal-Saxon secret councilor in Gotha. Ludwig Wachler was the father of the judge and politician Ernst Wachler , the grandfather of the lawyer Ludwig Wachler and the economic clerk Paul Wachler, and the great-grandfather of the ethnic author Ernst Wachler . His daughter Christine Wachler married Franz Passow in 1816 .
