Johann Georg Walte

Johann Georg Walte (born April 12, 1811 in Bremen ; † September 9, 1890 there ) was a German painter and draftsman .

Johann Georg Walte was the son of Dr. jur. Franz Ernst Walte (1783–1856) from a wealthy family in Bremen. He first studied law at the University of Heidelberg , but from 1832 onwards he trained as a painter in Munich from Albert Zimmermann . From 1838 to 1840 he was a student of the landscape painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . The following three years he stayed in Italy , where he a. a. in Rome , Capri and Sicily before he came back to Bremen in 1843. For a short time he went back to Düsseldorf again in 1847. Later he made a few more trips to Austria , Switzerland and Norway . Walte mostly spent the summer months in the Bremen Blockland and in Oberneuland . In 1863 he married.

Works

The drawn landscape was Waltes preferred subject. Mostly he chose situations from the closer surroundings of Bremen: oak forests, break landscapes, river banks, dikes, also the view of one or the other village, but rarely with figurative staffage . Some pencil drawings are intended as studies or templates for lithographs . The large-format sheets, on the other hand, especially his pen drawings, are to be regarded as independent drawings. They were often given a clay character by washing .

There are also some portrait drawings of him in the Bremen Kunsthalle . His images of the future from the Bürgerpark , which were created in 1878 and show the recently created Bremer Bürgerpark , how it could look in a few decades, are a curiosity . In 1929, Waltes daughter donated a large part of the graphic estate to the Focke Museum .
