Johann Gottlob Worbs (born May 7, 1760 in Röhrsdorf near Friedeberg am Queis , Silesia ; † November 12, 1833 in Priebus , Silesia) was a German Lutheran theologian and historian.

life and work

Worbs was born as the eldest of nine siblings of the housekeeper Gottlob Worbs (1734–1797) and Anna Rosine. Born Wangenknecht (1739–1806). He attended the school in his hometown, from 1774 the school in Niederwiesa near Greiffenberg and from 1777 the one in Hirschberg . From 1781 to 1784 he studied Protestant theology at the University of Halle and then worked for a few years as a tutor. In 1787 he became a pastor in Priebus - a task that he fulfilled until his death. In addition, he became superintendent of the Principality of Sagan in 1804 and general superintendent of Sagan and the Prussian Upper Lusatia in 1818 .

Since 1790 he was a member of the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences , since 1819 honorary member of the Silesian Society for Patriotic Culture and later he also became a full member of the Thuringian-Saxon History Association. In 1817 he was supported by the University of Breslau Dr. phil. and in 1830 to D. theol. appointed. He was also awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 3rd class in 1831 .

Worbs was one of the earliest historians of Lusatia , especially Lower Lusatia . He also dealt with his homeland Silesia. He researched the local and state history as well as the church history and put on collections of sources . His main work is the first collection and scientific processing of Niederlausitzer sources Inventarium diplomaticum Lusatiae inferioris .

On January 21, 1795 he married Christiane Louise Eleonore Klingsporn (* around 1767; † September 6, 1832), the second-born daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Friedrich Wilhelm von Klingsporn and Kant's friend Charlotte von Knobloch. The marriage resulted in two sons and two daughters.

In 2014, a square in Przewóz (Priebus) was named after him.
