Johann Heilmann

Johann Heilmann , since 1887 Knight von Heilmann , (born February 5, 1825 in Munich ; † November 6, 1888 ibid) was a Bavarian lieutenant general and military historian .

Life

Heilmann was first educated in the cadet corps and then joined the Bavarian Army . In 1859 he became a captain in the general staff and as a general staff officer he fought in the war against Prussia in 1866 and in the Franco-German war in 1870/71 .

In 1872 Heilmann was appointed commander of a battalion in the 1st Infantry Regiment , and in 1873 he became a colonel and commander of the 4th Infantry Regiment . A little later he was appointed commander of the Bavarian occupation Brigade of the fortress of Metz . In 1883 Heilmann resigned from active military service as Lieutenant General.

Heilmann had been an extraordinary member of the Academy of Sciences in the historical class since 1884 , to which he had previously been a corresponding member since 1852.

In 1887 Heilmann was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown by Prince Regent Luitpold . Associated with this was the elevation to the personal nobility and he was allowed to call himself Ritter von Heilmann after his entry in the nobility register .

From a young age he wrote a number of military-historical writings.
