Johann Heinrich Schröder (theologian)
Johann Heinrich Schröder (born October 4, 1666 in Hallerspringe, today: Springe , † June 30, 1699 in Meseberg ) was a Protestant pastor and hymn poet .
During his studies in Leipzig from 1684 to 1687 he came into contact with August Hermann Francke and remained his student in Erfurt from 1690 to 1691 , where he was expelled with 33 other students from Francke.
From 1696 the passionate preacher of Pietism took over the pastoral office in Meseberg near Magdeburg. Together with his wife Tranquilla Sophia (née Wolf), he composed chorales, some of which were criticized as chiliastic .
Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen confirms the authorship of five songs, which were initially included in Hallesche sacred hymns (1697) and which he included in his Freylinghausen hymns (1704). His chorale Jesu hilf siegen was particularly popular in the 18th century. In the evangelical hymn book you can find the songs of Jesus, help conquer, you prince of life (EG 373) and one thing is needed, oh Lord, this one (EG 386).
