Johann Heinrich Schramm (painter)

Johann Heinrich Schramm (born May 21, 1810 in Teschen , † March 7, 1865 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter .

Life

Johann Heinrich Schramm, son of a master carpenter, originally wanted to become an architect and studied from 1825 to 1827 at the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna. His great artistic talent was shown in the architectural drawings and he switched to the Vienna Academy , where he studied history drawing from 1831 to 1832. He then continued his self-taught education and switched from flower painting to portrait painting  . From 1837 he lived in Prague , then in Dresden . He was friends with the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and accompanied him on his trip through Germany in 1841. In 1842 he was appointed professor at the Weimar drawing school and court painter . In 1865 he returned to Vienna, where he died shortly afterwards.

In 1844 Schramm was awarded the Dutch Order of the Oak Crown .

Schramm painted numerous portraits of aristocratic personalities, preferably in watercolor , and also created drawings and miniatures.
