John I of Strasbourg
John I of Strasbourg († November 6, 1328 ) was Chancellor of King Albrecht I , Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt from 1305 to 1306 and of Strasbourg from 1306 to 1328.
Life
Johann I came from the area around Zurich . Older chronicles assume that his place of origin is Dürbheim in Swabia. He was the son of a priest and a single woman. Despite his “humble birth” he rose to the highest ecclesiastical dignity. He received support from the House of Habsburg . It is believed that he studied at the University of Bologna . Among other things, he held the office of canon in Constance, he was a canon in St. Peter in Strasbourg and in the Grossmünster in Zurich. Later he became the provost of the Grand Minster. In the wake of the kings, he rose to become royal chancellor until 1303. The Eichstätter cathedral chapter chose Johann I to secure the claims of the inheritance of the Hirschbergs against the Bavarian dukes, especially Bavaria-Munich . He was trusted to do justice to this task, partly because of his proximity to the king. He was present at the negotiations between King Albrecht I and Pope Clement V in Lyons regarding the imperial coronation. Here he was transferred from Eichstätt to Strasbourg at the request of the Pope. He was buried in the chapel of the Molsheim hospital he had built , and his tomb was later moved to the Jesuit church there .
