Johann Jakob Samhammer , also Samhaimer or Samhamer , (born March 3, 1685 in Hanau ; † April 12, 1745 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German architect . From 1727 to 1745 he was a city ​​architect in Frankfurt am Main.

life and work

Little is known about Samhammer's origins and training. Between 1713 and 1722 he was in the service of Joachim Sigismund von Ziegler and Klipphausen and was entrusted with the production of work drawings and models for the new building of the Joachimstein Abbey in Radmeritz . During this time Samhammer lived in Dresden. In November 1727 the Frankfurt council took him into the service as a city architect. His tasks included the inspection of civil buildings and the fortifications of Frankfurt , carrying out the necessary new buildings, supervising the craftsmen commissioned by the council and the building materials used, and advising the council on construction disputes. He was also involved in fire fighting measures.

In addition to his main work, the Hauptwache , built in 1729/30 , he was involved in numerous other building projects, including the baroque facade renovation of the house Zum Goldenen Schwan am Römer , the renovation of the municipal high school in the former barefoot monastery and the construction of a farm for the general alms box in zu Frankfurt-owned village of Dortelweil . In 1742 he had the buildings erected for the coronation ceremony for Emperor Charles VII .

His drafts for the new construction of the Kaisertreppe in Römer in 1740 and for the restoration of the Main Bridge, which collapsed in 1739, were not carried out.
