Johann Jakob Schoppmann , also Johann Jakob Schopmann (born November 21, 1767 in Neustadt an der Haardt ; † March 28, 1840 there ) was a German lawyer , politician and landowner. He campaigned for the preservation of freedom of the press and freedom of expression in Germany and was one of the organizers of the Hambach Festival of 1832.

Johann Jakob Schoppmann was born on November 21, 1767 in Neustadt an der Haardt as the son of a pharmacist . He studied law in Heidelberg and was later referred to as the landowner and owner of a timber business. From a young age he took part in the city's political life.

In the spring of 1794 Schoppmann was taken hostage by the French in Landau and later in Zabern . After the conquest of the left bank of German territory by French revolutionary troops he was in the French period of the " Rhine District (later Bavarian influence" Rheinpfalz ") operates" from 1798 to 1814 in several offices - including Justice of the Peace, 1798 President of the District Court, 1802-1814 Councilor in the Département du Mont-Tonnerre and Mayor of Neustadt. In 1832, Schopmann worked for the political magazine Deutsche Tribüne, published by Johann Georg August Wirth , and became a member of the German Press and Fatherland Association . In the run-up to the Hambach Festival , he signed the letter of invitation, but he had to hand over the opening speech of the festival to Philipp Hepp due to illness . His house was also the meeting place for a meeting on May 28, 1832 for leading opposition figures. He took over the banners of the Hambach Festival as a senior (elder) for safekeeping.

In 1834 he was sentenced to imprisonment for signing protests against the repression of the German Confederation . Schoppmann died on March 28, 1840 in his hometown.
