Johann Josef Mazza (born May 22, 1752 in Koblenz ; † May 23, 1828 there ) was first mayor and then mayor of Koblenz from 1813 to 1818 .

Life and work

Mazza was born as the son of Josef Antonius Mazza and Helene Therese, née Fachbach. His oldest sister was the mother of Joseph Görres , another sister married the doctor Modest Settegast, another the teacher Nikolaus Settegast, whose daughter Caroline Settegast became a well-known benefactress. The Mazza family of spice dealers originally came from Italy . Like his father, Mazza was a businessman by trade .

Acting as the Lord Mayor of Koblenz

Mazza had already been mayor at the time of the Trier electoral state . In 1799 he became an assistant to the Mairie (mayor's office), before taking over the office of Maire (mayor) of Koblenz on April 3, 1813 . At that time the city was the capital of the Department de Rhin-et-Moselle and thus part of France . After the official takeover by Prussia on April 23, 1814, Mazza remained in this position and on April 5, 1815 became the first Prussian Lord Mayor of Koblenz.

The arrival of the first tourist ship (the English Caledonia) on the Rhine (1817) and the establishment of the Prussian Police Department in Koblenz (1818) fell during his tenure. Koblenz became part of the Koblenz district in 1817 and was able to increase its population from 7,992 (1800) to 11,793 (1812) during Mazza's tenure.

Mazza's term of office was supposed to end in 1817, but the city council asked the Prussian government to extend it because of his services. After a long examination, however, the government saw no more use for Mazza and in March 1818 he himself asked for his release. His successor in office was on March 26, 1818 Abundius Maehler .
