Johann Carl Eschmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Carl Eschmann (born April 12, 1826 in Winterthur ; † October 27, 1882 in Zurich ), also Johann Karl Eschmann , was a Swiss composer and pianist of the Romantic period .

life and work

Eschmann was the son of the Winterthur military bandmaster Heinrich Eschmann (1802-1882). Eschmann attended piano lessons with Alexander Müller in Zurich and later studied with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Ignaz Moscheles in Leipzig, among others . He then worked in Winterthur (1850–1859), Schaffhausen (1859–1866) and Zurich (from 1866) as a piano teacher and composer, and found a friend and admirer in Johannes Brahms . Eschmann benefited from acquaintance with leading musicians of his time such as Louis Spohr , Theodor Kirchner and Richard Wagner , who dedicated a serenade to him. The piano teacher Carl Eschmann-Dumur was his cousin and piano student.

Eschmann's works are particularly influenced by the compositional styles of Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn. The song compositions based on poems by the Winterthur poet August Corrodi are noteworthy, with their emotional and onomatopoeic sounds reminiscent of the music of Schumann and Schubert , but at the same time taking up the contemporary developments of the New German School . Otherwise, Eschmann is considered a rather conservative composer.

Eschmann's estate is administered by the Zurich Central Library .
