Johann Michael Hartmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Michael Hartmann (* around 1725/30 in Albbruck ; † around 1810 probably near St. Märgen ) was a German sculptor of the late Baroque in southwest Germany.

Life

Little is known about the life of the "hardly noticed Baroque master" Johann (Hans) Michael Hartmann, although he created numerous altars. This is probably due to the fact that he can only be proven as a “not settled” artist, as a “vagabundus” with an often changing place of residence. For the first time in 1760/62 in Ortisei (“abm Kohler”), a daughter was born to him in 1765 in St. Trudpert , so that he was referred to as a “monastery sculptor” or “sculptor of Staufen ”. Around 1770 he worked in Laufenburg AG . In 1777 he had citizenship in Finsterlingen (community Dachsberg ); In 1805 he lived "on the Spirtzen not far from Breitnau ". In the last mention in 1809 he is "called Herrgotts-Michel in the Ravennen". Apparently he had married a second time to a widow from the Prechtal.

Works by Johann Michael Hartmann are only partly recorded in the archives, partly they are attributions.

  • Around 1763/65 he carved the statues of the apostles Peter and Paul, tabernacles and other ingredients for the old parish church of St. Gallus in Merzhausen for the older baroque altars taken over from the Benedictine abbey of St. Trudpert
  • Around 1764 he created four side altars on the choir arch of the St. Trudpert monastery church
  • Around 1765, sculpting work for the high altar of the parish church of St. Alban in Bad Krozingen is attributed to him
  • Around 1765 he carried out the high altar, confessionals and other work for the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Minseln , now a district of Rheinfelden
  • The high altar for the town church in Laufenburg AG and statues for churches in Hochsal and Görwihl are dated around 1770
  • In 1805 Hartmann carved the high altar for the parish church of St. Josef in Gremmelsbach, today a district of Triberg , and the high altar for the Lindenberg chapel near St. Peter is attributed to him
  • The carving of the altars in the "Kirchle" Felix and Nabor in Schmidhofen , now part of Bad Krozingen as a hamlet belonging to Tunsel , is attributed to Johann Michael Hartmann

Appreciation

What is striking about Hartmann's work are “the lively designed forms and lively ornaments”. These works “are among the most elegant of the local Rococo.” The sculptures are viewed as weaker. Although their robes are sometimes "quite lively, but the faces look coarse and the bald heads ugly". "In terms of the drapery as well as in the rough faces, the carver lags behind Matthias Faller in St. Peter or Johann Michael Winterhalder in Vöhrenbach ."
