Location of Tunsel in Baden-Württemberg

Tunsel is a village with almost 2000 inhabitants in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district in Baden-Württemberg . The municipality of Tunsel, which was independent until January 1974, with the districts of Burghöfe and Schmidhofen is now part of the town of Bad Krozingen .

geography

Tunsel is located in the Breisgau , about 18 kilometers southwest of Freiburg . The flat, undulating, forest-free area around Tunsel gradually slopes off towards the northwest towards the Rhine . The soils of the 9.21 km² district are used intensively for agriculture, they are partially drained by ditches ( Seltenbach, Neugraben, Bruckgraben ).

history

Tunsel was first mentioned as villa Tonsol in 860 , when three freemen donated their entire property to the Benedictine monastery of St. Trudpert in the Münstertal . The affiliation of Tunsel and the hamlet of Schmidhofen to the monastery lasted until the secularization in 1803. Tunsel supplied the monks with agricultural products (wheat, farm animals) and, above all, with wine, which was stored in the rectory cellar.

In 1256 the monastery also acquired Tunsel Castle . From 1479 onwards, all inhabitants of the village belonged to the abbey as St. Trudpert's subjects . The monastery built a baroque church in Tunsel from 1714 to 1724, and the neo-Gothic church built in 1855 now stands in its place.

During the Thirty Years War , the residents of Tunsel fled the Swedes to Switzerland. They came back with new settlers after the end of the war, which can still be recognized today by family names from Switzerland. The War of the Spanish Succession brought misery and destruction to the residents. Among other things, the church bell had to be sold; it still hangs in the turret of Staufen town hall today .
