Johann Nepomuk Hueber (born May 14, 1802 in Oberperfuss , Tyrol ; † May 24, 1885 in Innsbruck , Tyrol) was a Tyrolean painter .

Life

Johann Nepomuk Hueber was born on May 14, 1802 in Oberperfuss. He was the ninth child of the Tyrolean surveyor Blasius Hueber (1735–1814) and his second wife Magdalena, née Raich. His uncle was the Tyrolean church builder Andreas Hueber and his half-brother the Tyrolean surveyor Magnus Hueber .

At the age of 18, Hueber decided to learn the profession of painter. For this reason he moved to Telfs at the age of 20 to do an apprenticeship with the painter Leopold Puellacher . He helped him, among other things, with coloring some churches, such as in Leutasch and Pfaffenhofen .

In order to advance his education, he began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1825 , where he learned in the care of Robert von Langer . From 1829 to 1831 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna .

Hueber's original interest was primarily history painting . He therefore applied for a scholarship to study in Rome. For this purpose he painted his work "Thomas Lays His Fingers in Christ's Side Wound". However, since he was refused the hoped-for grant, he turned to portraiture . For this purpose he went to Salzburg in 1832 and to Russia in 1834 . In Russia he was able to acquire a good reputation among the nobility. After stays in Warsaw , Saint Petersburg , Tallinn , Tartu and Riga , among others , Hueber returned to Vienna in 1847 and to Innsbruck in 1850.

Particularly noteworthy are the portrait of his brother Magnus Hueber and his study of a female head. Between 1848 and 1849 he portrayed the eight-year-old Archduke Ludwig Viktor of Austria and Archduchess Sophie Friederike of Bavaria . Many more portraits followed. In total, Johann Nepomuk Hueber is said to have painted around 1000 portraits, some at a rapid pace, in the course of his 20-year career.

Due to a serious eye problem, Hueber was forced to give up painting in his later years. For this reason he devoted himself more and more to social tasks and worked partly in a leading role in several Innsbruck organizations. He died on May 24, 1885 in Innsbruck.
