Johann Nicolaus Green († 1766 in Lübeck ) was Lübeck's first council printer and founded the Lübeck advertisements .

prehistory

In 1524 Ludwig Dietz , a native of Speyer , came to the Hanseatic city from Rostock and founded the first printing company here . This passed to Johann Balhorn in 1531 . Lauritz Albrecht acquired the print shop in 1599. Valentin Schmalherz , he acquired the print shop in 1629, bequeathed it to his son and the latter to his grandson. From his grandson, Moritz Valentin Schmalherz , acquired Green in 1721, who, in the opinion of his contemporaries, was both skillful and hardworking in his profession.

career

Green needed a privilege to practice his trade , as Johann Henrich von Seelen - Rector of the Lübeckisches Gymnasium - reported in a text he published on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the art of printing in 1740: “... March 14, 1721 was a very wise advice of this city Johann Nicolaus Green with the book printer privilege favored by the authorities, and confirmed it by a decree ”. Three years later, in 1724, his printing house was elevated to a council book printing house. Seelen writes about this: “When he had been printing all kinds of things for almost 3 years and filed good samples of his art and skill, he was first given the title of a highly noble and esteemed Rahts printer, also through a March 3rd, 1724 given Decree was issued. "And further" Gedachter Rahts-Buchdrucker showed himself with an excellent job in the following year, in that the Lübeck Handbibel, that is, the entire Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, translated into German by D. Martin Luthern , overlooked for the new after the best specimens, supplied with brief concordants , and useful for salutary use; on this 3 books not found with the other hand Bibles, from the III and IV B. Esta and the III book of the Maccabeer. Wobey because of the soul. To find Mr. Joh. Arnds Informatorium Bibliceum. In addition to a preface by Georg Heinrich Götzens , D. of the Lübeck Churches Superintend. including the mentioned short singing and prayer beech. Lübeck. Published by Johann Christian Rüdiger. Depressed by Johann Nicolaus Green. EE Hochw. Raths Buchdr. 1725. "

As early as 1737 a new edition of the above mentioned Bible was necessary. These, as well as other works printed in the Greenschen Offizin , are in the city library , of the more well-known works that were still widely used on the 200th anniversary of the acquisition of the printing works, only the “Thorough Message from the Kayserl” should be mentioned. Freyen und hr Reichsstadt Lübeck ”by the former senior and main pastor Jacob von Melle .

The books printed by Green convey a remarkable picture of the efficiency of a printing company at that time without the highly developed tools that are now available to him in this trade. Thus, the Bible comprises 1486 pages of tight printing without the pages of the foreword , the title page the above title in decorative writing in black and red print, a cover sheet in copper engraving shows the Risen One on a marble plinth in a church hall, below him the medallion portrait of Luther a (probably somewhat unsuccessful) view of old Lübeck with the saying below:

Blessed be the city, happiness reigns in its gates,

The Bible remains their consolation to which they conspired.

A 110-page appendix contains the hymns sung at that time and a number of prayers in all situations.

Another excellent print is the reprint of the Lübeck constitution, city law , etc., published on the council's order , a quarto volume, also with an ornamental title page printed in red and black and a cover sheet engraved in copper, that under the Lübeck eagle , Kaiser on the left Friedrich I , right Emperor Ferdinand III. and underneath again shows a much more carefully executed city view this time.

Lübeck advertisements

With the permission of a councilor, Green announced on January 9, 1751 that he would publish a weekly paper, as is already done in other trading cities. The first number of the Lübeck advertisements appeared on March 1, 1751 in a small quarto format . Until they were discontinued on December 31, 1933, they were to be published by the same publisher without interruption, albeit in several different and improved forms.
