Johann Nikolaus Hert

Johann Nikolaus Hert (also: Hertius, Hertz ; born October 6, 1651 in Niederkleen ; † September 19, 1710 in Gießen ) was a German legal scholar.

Life

Born as the son of a pastor, he enjoyed his first training with his father and was then tutored by a private tutor. In 1664 he moved to the grammar school in Gießen, in 1667 the University of Gießen , he moved to the University of Jena , the University of Leipzig and the University of Wittenberg . In 1676 he returned to Giessen, obtained a licentiate in law, became an attorney in the princely chancellery and gave various lectures at the university.

In 1683 he was appointed full professor of political science and associate professor of law. After his doctorate in law in 1686 , he became a full professor at the law faculty and was promoted to the highest professorship until 1702. He became an assessor at the Hessian court, was inspector of academic finances and on February 26, 1710 Chancellor of the Giessen University, and 1707 Hessian councilor.

As a legal scholar, he tried to enrich his subject area with philosophical and historical elements. Many of his writings contain explanations of German antiquities, the state and feudal law. But he also dedicated his writings to civil and natural rights.

Hert's brother Johann Christoph Hert was a professor of medicine at Giessen University.
