Johann Paul Schor
Johann Paul Schor (also called Giovanni Paolo Tedesco ) (baptized June 27, 1615 in Innsbruck , † March 13, 1674 in Rome ) was an Austrian painter and versatile artist.
Life
Johann Paul Schor comes from a well-known Tyrolean artist family and first learned from his father, Hans Schor . Before 1640 he settled in Rome and studied the work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Pietro da Cortona , whose pupil he was. He became a member of the Accademia di San Luca art academy in 1654 and gained the favor of Pope Alexander VII , on whose behalf he was often active. Under Cortona, he furnished the Quirinal Palace with his brother Egid Schor and numerous other artists in 1656/57, and he helped Bernini with the Cathedra Petri . In 1657 he painted in the papal summer residence Castel Gandolfo , in the early 1660s he created works in the Vatican and the frescoes in the great gallery of the Palazzo Colonna . His main occupation, however, was decorative painting , he designed ornaments for architecture, decorations for the arts and crafts, theatrical settings , magnificent bodies and staged pompous celebrations, including for the Colonna and the Borghese .
In 1638 he married Brigitta Trulla (or Frulli) in Rome. He owned a house in the Piazza di Spagna . Schor died on March 13, 1674 and was buried near the German church of Santa Maria dell'Anima . His atelier was continued after his death by his sons Philipp and Christoph .
Many of his works have been mistakenly assigned to Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the past .
