Johann Reinhard Rus also: Russ, Rusius, (* February 24, 1679 in Rod am Berg , † April 18, 1738 in Jena ) was a German oriental philologist, Graecist and Protestant theologian.
Life
Johann Reinhard was born the son of the teacher Johann Philipp Rus and his wife Katharina Hedwig Eberhard. After initial instruction from his father, he attended school in Usingen in 1688 and began studying at the University of Giessen on April 8, 1695 . Here Johann Heinrich May the Elder , Johann Christoph Bielenfeld (1664-1727), Johann Reinhard Hedinger and Georg Christian Bürcklin (* Durlach; † 1716 in Giessen) were his formative teachers. On May 6, 1698, he moved to the University of Jena , where Johann Andreas Danz , Johann Paul Hebenstreit (1660–1718), Johann Phillip Treuner (1666–1722), Georg Albrecht Hamberger (1662–1716), Burkhard Gotthelf Struve and Johann Franz Buddeus exerted a significant influence on the young student.
On September 20, 1699, he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy, completed his habilitation, and on July 11, 1708, he became an adjunct in the philosophy faculty of the Salana. After he had received an appointment as associate professor of philology on March 8, 1715, he took up this chair on August 2, 1713 and on March 8, 1715 became full professor of oriental languages. In addition, he received a professorship in the Greek language in 1721 and became a full professor of theology in 1729, where he resigned from the professorship of oriental languages. On March 31, 1733 he became a doctor of theology. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Jena University and was Rector of the Alma Mater in the summer semesters 1716, 1724 and in the winter semester 1734 .
Rus was married twice. His first marriage was with Johanna Maria Probst († April 30, 1722 in Jena), the daughter of Johannes Probst and Sophia Chemnitz († June 19, 1722 in Jena). He went into his second marriage in May 1723 to Susanne Maria Judel, with a stepdaughter of the Jena theology professor Michael Förtsch , from his first marriage. Five children survived the father.
