Johann Schmid (politician)

Johann Schmid (born January 14, 1850 in Vals , † May 27, 1931 in Zizers ; Catholic , resident in Vals) was a Swiss politician (Federal Democrat).

Life

Johann Schmid was born on January 14, 1850 in Vals as the son of the farmer , postman and businessman Lorenz Schmid and Ursula née Schnider. He attended the village school and the college in Schwyz , then he enrolled in Heidelberg , Munich and Zurich to study law. After graduating as a Dr. iur. Johann Schmid ran a law practice in Chur .

Schmid served as canton judge from 1885 to 1893 and 1903 to 1930, and from 1906 to 1930 as president of the cantonal court . He also appeared as an author of legal documents. Johann Schmid, who was married to Maria Elisabeth born Hähle, died on May 27, 1931 in Zizers.

At the political level, Schmid was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Graubünden from 1875 to 1883 and 1885 to 1887 , of which he was Chairman in 1909. He also worked in the Small Council from 1894 to 1902 and in the National Council from 1881 to 1893 and 1905 to 1919 . In addition, Johann Schmid served as the first Catholic district president of Chur from 1884 to 1891.

Johann Schmid was a protagonist of the Graubünden Federal Democrats and, in 1903, of the Conservative Democratic Party (KDP), who was firmly rooted in the Catholic milieu.
